THE CURRICULUM

Progression through ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip hop is determined not by how many years the

student has danced but by our staff’s evaluation of each individual student’s abilities and attitude.

BALLET

Mommy-and-Me - Classes where a child 18 months to 3 years old can come learn to dance with their mom or another adult.


Creative Dance - Specifically designed for youngsters, three, four, and five years old. These classes give initial exposure to rhythm, music, and coordination. The children learn to work with a group, to take turns and to listen attentively to instructions. Students attend class once a week.


Ballet for 1st and 2nd graders - This training introduces six, seven and eight year old children to ballet while staying within the limits of the immature anatomy. The goals are to improve coordination, strength, quickness of mind and self confidence. The students develop a feeling for movement and an awareness of their bodies. These classes will create a sound, strong foundation on which to build future training in classical ballet technique. Students attend class once a week.


Boys Ballet - Is a special class just for boys. This boy’s only class introduces boys to the art of ballet without the distraction of girls in class. The boys learn the same French vocabulary and classical ballet technique as the girls. The boys will be integrated into regular mixed classes. Students attend class once a week.


Ballet III, IV, V, and VI - Training in classical ballet technique is given at each of these levels. Classes progress through increasingly difficult barre work, center work, jumps, turns and combinations, Ballet III through VI students attend two classes weekly. Pre-point is also started here.


Intermediate and Advanced Ballet - Training is on more advanced steps and using head and arms and legs together with greater ease and fluidity. The correct French terminology is stressed so the dancer can dance with confidence wherever they may go. Intermediate and Advanced students attend class three or four times a week. These students also take a class focused on Pointe. In Pointe class great care is taken when choosing students to be permitted to work in Pointe shoes. Consideration is given to age, strength and technique.


Adult Ballet - Classes are designed to enhance the general physical condition of the student, with emphasis placed on improving posture, muscle tone, flexibility and stamina.

TAP

Beginning Tap I and II - Students will work on a series of graded tap techniques. All students will complete one graded level of technique at years end.


Intermediate - Students will continue more advanced work on tap technique.


Advanced - These experienced student will work to tap technique levels of five through six and above with a completion in on graded level of tap technique at years end.

HIP HOP/JAZZ

Beginning - Students learn to count music and find the beat. Basic steps and combinations are introduced. Work is begun on technique.


Intermediate - This class is a continuation of the basics learned in the beginning classes. Students develop the basic steps and combinations. More advanced choreography and technique are introduced.


Advanced - Students are doing extensive work in style and combinations. Work is done on speeding up steps and combinations. Style and Character are studied.

Lyrical

Lyrical is a type of jazz which is a combination of jazz and ballet and usually tell a story with the music.

Swing/Ballroom

Swing - Teen classes with aerials and a lot of fun and energy.


Ballroom - Classes for teenagers and adults. We cover Waltz, Cha Cha, Tango, Two-step, Foxtrot, and Swing. Adults are not always in the spring performance.

Acro

Acro is similar to the portion of gymnastics which uses floorwork. It is a style that combines dance technique with acrobatic elements, including rules, cartwheels, bridges, walkovers, and more. Classes focus on developing strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and musicality.

BRANCH STUDIO

Classes are offered in Castle Rock as well for ages 3-10. The instructor presents the same weekly curriculum presented at the Longview studio. Students, who progress past the highest level at their branch, are encouraged to attend the next level in Longview.

DRESS CODE

Evergreen Dance Center has a dress code for each of its dance disciplines. Having the students dress uniformly help the teacher focus on the dancer. It is also good for the students, putting everyone on the same foot when starting class.


BALLET


Women and girls: Pink ballet shoes and pink tights, leotard color dependent on class. Hair must be in a bun if it is long enough. No skirts for Ballet III through Advanced. Pink ballet sweaters may be worn. NO wild warm-ups.


Men and Boys: Black tights, leggings or sweatpants. White T-shirt. Black ballet slippers with white socks.


ALL OTHER CLASSES


All Students: Jazz - Black ballet/lyrical shoes or jazz oxfords. Hip Hop - Black sneakers. Tap - Black tap shoes. Lyrical - Toe socks or lyrical shoes. Swing - Leotard and stretch pants. Ballroom - Clothes that are comfortable. Acro - Gymnastics leotard, bare feet, and low ponytail in the back if hair is long enough.


Women and girls: Evergreen Dance Center T-Shirt and bike shorts, leggings, black dance pants, or black or nude tights.

Hair must be in a pony tail (if long enough).


Men and Boys: Loose shorts, sweatpants or black dance pants, and an Evergreen Dance Center T-Shirt.


NO JEANS OR JEAN SHORTS
